Be The B.E.S.T To Achieve Success For All

Welcome to Year 5/6 Blue Base

A big WELCOME from Mrs Dunn, Mrs Cresswell and Mr Fox!

This is the Year 5 and 6 class page for Blue Base. Here you will find all the useful information that you will need during your time in our class.

Our day starts at 8.40am when our door will be open for children to come in until 8.50am. Our day ends at 3.10pm.

Reading

We love reading books from our upper key stage 2 reading spine in class and during story time at the end of the day. Regular reading at home really does help your children to become fluent, confident readers. Therefore, we ask that your child completes daily reading at home, of either a levelled book or a book from the classroom or library, (levelled books are changed each Monday). The aim is to read a minimum of 5 times in a week for 15 minutes each time.

Maths

Regular maths fluency practise at home is really beneficial for your child as they progress in Year 5 and 6. You can complete times-table practise on Times Table Rock Stars and other fluency skills on Sumdog. Your child will bring home their own logins.

Spelling

Accurate spelling supports writing fluency so children will also be asked to practise their spelling skills at home as well as at school. We learn a new spelling rule each week, which is sent home on a half-termly plan. You can support your child by playing spelling games and practising writing the spellings. In addition to this, they will also need to practise key words from the Key Stage 2 lists. These lists will also be sent home each half term.

PE
Indoor PE is on Thursday and outdoor PE is on Friday.

Children need to come to school in their PE kit which is trainers, black shorts/bottoms, a white t-shirt and black zip up jacket. Please make sure your child can remove their own earrings or remove these prior to PE on these days. Long hair will need to be tied back.

History and Geography

A new history or geography topic is introduced each half term. Your child will receive a Knowledge Organiser of important facts to learn alongside a selection of topic related homework activities they can complete. In half term four, our history topic is called 'Battles, Blackouts and the Blitz'.

If there is any information that you can't find on our class page, please get in touch with the school office by email and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thank you

Year 5/6 visit to Kelham Island - World War Two Experience Day

We had a brilliant day at Kelham Island Museum learning about what life was like for children in Sheffield during WW2. We particularly enjoyed experiencing an Anderson Shelter and using our enquiry skills to work out who the evacuee suitcases belonged to.

Year 5/6 Brass Concert

History

Year 5/6 used mime and freeze framing during their ‘Experience Day’ to show what a character may have been thinking and feeling whilst living during the time of segregation and slavery in America.
